We Need New Benchmarks & Role-Models At Work

Never before in human history have, we see how dramatically work, worker and workplaces have changed. The world is now hyperconnected. That is giving rise to new business models. There are new generations stepping into the workplace whose view of careers is very different from the previous generations. Technology is creating new kinds of jobs that our educational institutions do not prepare us for.

Human beings are living longer. Organizations are dying sooner than ever before. Today’s dreamer is tomorrow’s unicorn. Today’s unicorn displaces yesterday’s incumbent who is bankrupt. Occasionally we see a Market Shaper or an Incumbent disrupting its own business and once again becoming a Market Shaper. A handful of the Dreamers become Unicorns. A handful of Unicorns become Market Shapers. Organizations are being forced to figure out how to ride the Digital Tsunami. Doing nothing in the face of the Digital Tsunami is dangerous.

Dreamers and Unicorns

It is not just organizations that can be categorized as Dreamers and Unicorns. Our career graphs can also be categorized in the same way. We start our life as a Dreamer. Some of us discover the magic potion that turns a Dreamer into a Unicorn. They grow and scale new heights. The top-earning writer on the paid newsletter platform Substack earns more than $500,000 a year from reader subscriptions. The top content creator on Podia, a platform for video courses and digital memberships, makes more than $100,000 a month.

Careers are being crafted on passion and creativity. Technology is helping us collaborate in a boundaryless manner across geographies and disciplines. From one job held after college until the day of retirement, people are experiencing many shifts. The half-life of skills has dropped. Millennials and GenZ have very different expectations for work and careers.

The New Code of Work

Eighty-four percent of millennials and 81% of Gen Z’ers surveyed by Deloitte for the Global Millennial Survey 2019, said they would consider joining the gig economy. However, for India, this figure is higher as 94% millennials and Gen Z says they would consider joining the gig economy. The millennials included in the study (covering 42 countries including India) were born between January 1983 and December 1994. The Gen Z respondents were born between January 1995 and December 2002.

It is not surprising to see the Millennials and Gen Z choosing new forms of work. If machines are going to take over all the routine, rule-based jobs. The skills needed by humans will be creativity, critical thinking and problem solving, communication using the new media and collaboration. That is #NewCodeOfWork.
